'In seeking my advice the client outlined the existing plans that he had and was adamant that he had some £200,000 critical illness in place and that this was very important to him and was interested in loan and family protection payable in the event of death. He believed he had £100000 already in place for this provision by a previous plan and required an overall cover of £300000 to achieve his objective . He instructed me therefore to recommend the shortfall cover. I advised that I could not provide a recommendation until I had viewed and ascertained the correct nature of his existing plans and then would progress matters further. The investigation revealed he did not have critical illness cover and was confusing this for the Terminal Illness benefit under a life policy. It also revealed that his £100000 existing standalone life cover plan was one that only paid on Accidental Death. A lot of clients holding old plans either have been misguided and or have not understood the true nature of the plan hence it is important that an adviser does not just accept the clients opinion as to what he has. It is always prudent to re-check before formulating a recommendation. Mr Bhartiya was provided with advice and recommendation that met his objective'
